With the technological change in communication via media and social broadcasts, our world is now globally accessible. As such, we should endow our students with an increased awareness, a global understanding. Being conscious is being aware. We should teach about the Earth as a specific entity – not just focus on a level of nationhood.
Global Awareness should integrate geography, cultural history, religion, trade and economics, indigenous ethnic social systems and customs, populations and resource management, as well as astronomy and our place in space. Global Awareness is a subject that specifically emphasizes a celebration of diversity. Global Awareness should offer communication connections via social sites and web conferences. To contextualise understanding of the ‘big picture’, global awareness should function on tiers of geographic awareness: Local, National, Continental, Global.
There should be a broad understanding of our planet as a unique planet shared by all life, and our responsibility as custodians for future generations.
