OPENNESS TO NEW IDEAS IS BEING CURIOUS – AND CURIOSITY IS A BURNING DESIRE TO LEARN, SEEKING TO INVESTIGATE, BEING INQUISITIVE, LONGING TO DISCOVER MORE.
Learning is about being open to new ideas, open to accepting we are wrong, and open to change. Openness is closely aligned with curiosity. Curiosity strengthens memory.
In a study undertaken by the University of California, two findings highlight the importance of curiosity in learning:
- Curiosity prepares the brain for learning
- Curiosity makes subsequent learning more rewarding
- Curiosity and openness to new ideas are promoted by asking quality questions – not giving an answer.
- Openness is also developed via explicitly teaching the value of Respect
